California Climate Choices

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) have a multi-media website -- called Climate Choices supporting the passage of a precident setting bill that would place California at the forefront of the opportunities flowing from taking action on Global Warming.

AB 32â¬possibly THE most important environmental bill of 2006â¬is headed for a showdown in the state legislature in August. AB 32 is the first-ever economy-wide cap on global warming emissions in the nation. It requires California to reduce its emissions 25 percent by 2020 and puts the state on the path toward reducing its emissions 80 percent by mid-century.

Everyone benefits if this law is passed.

The Climate Choices website is full of excellent video, text and photos which explain the many ways that Global Warming will impact human populations.

If you are in California, write a letter supporting this important legislation.

Fueling America: A special report at CNN

CNN has produced an online special report that ties together lots of their reporting on Global Warming and Energy issues in America.

It starts from the premise that the scientists agree that human activities are contributing to Global Warming.

Some of the business stories have obvious spin. There is too much coverage of ethanol and not enough of solar and wind. None-the-less, it is a good effort and well worth the time to puruse.

Arctic oil drilling documentary

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with one of the producers of Oil on Ice, an insightful documentary investigating impacts on the area of the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve (ANWR) that Big Oil companies want to be given access to. It is kind of a cool DVD that has lots of web features if you play it on your computer.

The producers are dedicated to changing energy policy by changing the way we use media. They are visionary in their approach to making high-quality video that is enhanced by the type of interactivity that we have come to expect from an online and connected world. I can get behind that.

An Inconvenient Truth

They say that truth is stranger than fiction. In this case the truth is much scarier than fiction.

An Inconvenient Truth is a new film about global warming and Al Gore's campaign to do something about it. It will open in a few cities on May 24th and will be rolled out nationally in June.

Visit ClimateCrisis.net for more information.

Also scary:

The big oil response to this film has been to produce television commercials that say Carbon Dioxide is our friend. After all, we breath it out with every exhale.

ThinkProgress.org said it best:

It’s comforting to know that this is the best global warming rejectionists can come up with. There are plenty of things that are healthy and essential in reasonable quantities but harmful in extremely large quantities. (For example, drinking a few glasses of water is beneficial. Drinking 10 gallons of water can kill you.) We need some carbon dioxide, but too much causes global warming.

Exxon will obviously distort basic science to keep you from demanding change in Washington. Don't let it happen. What will you do to fight Exxon?
