Code Orange: UNHEALTHY for Sensitive Groups Air Quality levels in Central and Southern California

Monday, May 11-Tuesday, May 12: . In the Southwest, warm temperatures, sunny skies, and light winds will enhance ozone formation, resulting in Code Yellow: MODERATE Air Quality levels across much of Arizona, Nevada, and California. In addition, many interior valley locations in central and southern California will reach Code Orange: UNHEALTHY for Sensitive Groups Air Quality levels.

Further east, in the south-central states, warm temperatures and sunny skies will enhance ozone formation in Louisiana, leading to Code Yellow: MODERATE Air Quality levels. In Texas, smoke from agricultural burning in Mexico and Central America will be transported into the eastern and southern parts of the state, causing Air Quality levels to be Code Yellow: MODERATE. Further north, high pressure building over the Midwest will cause light winds to develop, limiting pollutant dispersion. In addition, mostly sunny skies will enhance ozone formation. As a result, Air Quality levels will be Code Yellow: MODERATE across parts of Indiana on Monday and southeastern Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio on Tuesday.

Air Quality Updates are meant to help you understand the threats to your health on a given day. We tell you how clean or polluted your air is expected to be, and what associated health effects might be a concern for you.

The updates warn of health effects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air.

EPA calculates the AQI for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particle pollution (also known as particulate matter), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
