Air Pollution Glossary

Acid rain:
Rainfall that is acidic because it contains pollution. It is usually used to describe the negative effects of sulfur and nitrogen-containing air pollution.

 

Acid deposition:
Depositing acidic compounds from the atmosphere onto surfaces (e.g., soils, water, man made structures) by either acid rain or direct contact between suspended acid compounds and the surface.

 

Allowance:
A discrete right to emit a specified amount of pollutant. Under a cap and trade program, allowances are initially divided amongst polluters but are then fully tradable.

 

Criteria Air Pollutants:
Pollutants identified in the federal Clean Air Act because they are known to harm human health when inhaled in sufficient concentrations. There are six criteria air pollutants: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, urban ozone, lead, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide.

 

Nitrogen Oxides:
This is a catch-all term meaning nitrogen oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and other molecules made up of nitrogen and oxygen (NOy). Emitted from combustion processes and natural sources (e.g., microbial functions in the soil and lightning), nitrogen oxides contribute to environmental problems such as acid rain, urban level ozone, particulate matter, and visibility impairment.

 

NOx :
Abbreviation for nitrogen oxides.

 

SO2:
Abbreviation for Sulfur dioxide.

 

Sulfur Dioxide:
A molecule emitted primarily in coal combustion processes. It is the principal cause of acid rain and can cause human health effects at high levels of exposure.
